We rarely ask about the things we most want to know.
But I was thinking if someone did, what would I say?
I hate simple steps for complicated things – it’s never that simple – but steps can help you get going. It can help you start to get your arms around a big thing.
So, I’d say go down this road to have a good shot at a successful marriage:
1. Have a trusting, dependent relationship with God.
2. Be growing in humility and selflessness.
3. Know you don’t own this marriage thing. Christians love applying the idea of stewardship to money; it actually applies to everything.
4. Understand the purpose of marriage and how it’s supposed to function. Yes, the inventor invented it for a purpose.
“But, how do I accomplish its purpose?”
Well, you start with letting the owner own it, and you manage it under his ownership. (#3)
“But, how do I do that?”
That takes humility and selflessness. (#2)
“And just exactly how am I going to do that?”
Well, that’s where the trusting, dependent relationship with God comes in. (#1)
And we’re back where we started.
More later.
