It keeps things from getting more serious than you want them to be. It’s the sugar with the medicine. It maintains relationship when the things being said could be taken personal.
Flipping around on the TV, I see two guys on a news channel going at it back and forth. They obviously see things very differently. It’s the kind of everyday strong disagreement that people take personal all the time, and end up reacting emotionally and saying negative personal things about each other.
At the end, wrapping up, getting the last word in, the host says “I have no idea what (he) said in the last 12 seconds.”
Let’s see, what are your choices here? You can respond with:
- That’s because you’re an idiot!
- You’re always dismissing things people say that you disagree with!
- Why are you always trying to humiliate people to make yourself look good?
Stuff like that.
What does the guest actually respond with?
“You should rewind the tape – it’s really insightful.” And smiles. So does the host. Touché.
Humor rocks.
