The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me – Psalm 50.23
Why would thanksgiving be a sacrifice?
Because it isn’t easy?
Because it removes credit from you and assigns it somewhere else?
Because it recognizes justice – that credit should go where it’s due?
Because it takes humility?
Because of laziness?
Because you’ve already got all the love you need?
Maybe being accepted by God is a given, not worthy of any special appreciation.
Because wrath and judgment and hell and mercy and forgiveness and a bloody cross aren’t that big a deal?
Because you can be your own help, safe haven, strength and wisdom, never needing more?
Because of a numbness to the real source of things – like air and sun and life? You might get away with giving yourself credit for your home, job, and food – but you can’t buy air, sun and life.
Because it takes a conscious decision and action – it doesn’t just happen?
Because there really isn’t One who deserves it?
