Authority is the power to act, or the right to act, in some domain or jurisdiction.
Google “authority” and the first definition you see is on the Free Dictionary: “The power to enforce laws, exact obedience, command, determine, or judge.”
The presence of authority doesn’t necessarily mean it’s used. But it could be. It’s there.
This sometimes sounds good to people, especially when it’s thought of as, “Cool – I get to do what I want! And everybody else has to do what I want, too!” Most people know better, though. We usually avoid taking or having authority – we innately know there’s a responsibility that goes with it which crushes the getting to do what you want idea.
Then we see some things God says and we’re maybe even less enamored:
- from whom much is given, much is required – Luke 12.48
- with the measure you use it will be measured to you – Matthew 7.2
- those given a trust must prove faithful – 1 Corinthians 4.2
- leaders are accountable for their leadership – Hebrews 13.17
But, some still embrace it. They’re wired to, or want to use it for good (or evil or selfish) reasons. Whatever, you can’t escape it. The whole world is filled with authority.
