I always forget how the leaves don't really start changing color around here until late October, early November -- it seems like once October begins I think, hey, it's fall! where's the color? If you're planning a weekend trip to the mountains, some of these might help:

Some places to stay in the mountains. Brenda and I stayed at the Pisgah Inn a couple of years ago. Five-thousand feet up, the mountains looming right off the deck outside your room. I got up before daylight and watched the sunrise show -- from total black, to blinding brilliance in less than an hour. Right before the sun appeared over the trees in the distance, a fog materialized in the valleys between the mountains, then evaporated as the sun hit it -- it was gorgeous. Prices at the Inn are real reasonable and there's a decent restaurant right there with a great view, too. But the Inn closes November 3, so you better hustle.
And here's Blue Ridge Parkway gas, maps and info.
All these links will stay on the upper right through the fall.
